Movers Richmond Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy explains how Movers Richmond manages safety risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading, transport, unloading and storage-related activities. Our aim is to protect our staff, customers, contractors and members of the public, while delivering efficient and reliable moving services.
Our Health and Safety Commitment
Movers Richmond is committed to providing a safe working environment and to preventing accidents, injuries and damage to property during every stage of a move. Safety is an integral part of our planning, decision-making and daily operations. We comply with all applicable health and safety laws and follow industry best practice for moving and handling goods.
Responsibilities and Management
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management. Management will allocate suitable resources, set clear safety objectives and monitor performance. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing safe systems of work on site, ensuring that staff follow agreed procedures, use equipment correctly and report hazards promptly.
All employees share responsibility for maintaining safe working conditions. Every member of staff is required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Staff must cooperate with safety instructions, attend training sessions and immediately report unsafe conditions or near-miss incidents.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting removal work, we identify, assess and control potential hazards. This includes risks related to manual handling, working in confined or cluttered spaces, working at height when accessing higher levels, moving heavy or awkward items, vehicle movements, and interaction with customers and the public.
Where significant risks are identified, specific control measures are put in place. These may include planning safe lifting routes, using additional staff for heavy items, using appropriate equipment such as trolleys and lifting aids, and isolating or securing areas while loading and unloading. Our procedures are reviewed regularly and updated when work practices or services change.
Training, Competence and Supervision
All removal operatives receive initial and ongoing training in safe working practices. Training covers manual handling techniques, safe lifting and carrying, use of removal equipment, vehicle safety, communication on site, and emergency procedures. Staff are also instructed on the correct use and limitations of personal protective equipment.
Only trained and authorised staff are permitted to operate vehicles and specialist equipment. New team members work under supervision until they have demonstrated competence in their role. Refresher training is provided when procedures change, new equipment is introduced or performance monitoring highlights a need for further instruction.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core part of our work, and we take particular care to reduce the risk of strain and injury. Wherever reasonably practicable, we use trolleys, dollies, skates, straps and other mechanical aids to move heavy or bulky items. Team lifting is used for large or awkward loads, and staff are trained to recognise when an item is too heavy or unsafe to move without additional assistance.
All handling equipment is inspected regularly and maintained in safe working condition. Faulty or damaged equipment is removed from use immediately until it has been repaired or replaced. Staff must not improvise or modify equipment in ways that could compromise safety.
Vehicle Safety and Transport
Our vehicles are maintained in roadworthy condition and are inspected at appropriate intervals. Drivers are required to carry out basic checks before use and to report any defects as soon as possible. Loads are planned and secured to prevent movement during transport, protecting both our teams and customer property.
Drivers are trained to operate vehicles safely in a variety of environments, including residential streets and commercial premises. Safe driving, adherence to speed limits and consideration for other road users are mandatory at all times. Parking, loading and unloading are planned to minimise risks to pedestrians and staff.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
When working in or around customer premises, we take steps to minimise disruption and protect people who may be nearby. This may include establishing clear access routes, keeping walkways free from trip hazards, and using warning signs or verbal communication where appropriate.
Where access is restricted or involves stairs, tight corners or shared corridors, our team will assess the safest method for moving items. If an activity cannot be completed safely, work will be paused while an alternative method is agreed or additional resources are arranged.
Hazardous Items and Restricted Materials
Certain items and substances pose particular risks during removal work. We do not knowingly transport hazardous materials that are outside the scope of standard household or office removals. Customers are asked to inform us of any items that may be fragile, hazardous, unusually heavy or of special concern, so that we can assess and manage related risks.
Where batteries, fuels, chemicals or other potentially dangerous substances are present, they must be prepared and packed in line with applicable safety requirements. Our staff are instructed to stop work and seek guidance if they encounter unknown substances or conditions that appear unsafe.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, incidents and near misses must be reported to management as soon as practicable. We investigate such events to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Records are kept in accordance with legal and company requirements.
Our teams are briefed on emergency procedures relevant to their work, including what to do in case of fire, injury, road collisions or damage to property. Where necessary, first-aid provisions are available and staff know how to obtain further medical assistance.
Consultation, Communication and Continuous Improvement
We encourage open communication about health and safety. Staff are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about safer ways of working. Feedback from customers and contractors is also welcomed and considered when updating our policies and procedures.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective, relevant and aligned with current legislation and best practice in the removals industry. Any significant changes to our operations or legal requirements will trigger an earlier review and revision where needed.
